Creating a Home That Feels Like Summer

There's a certain feeling that comes with summer. The windows stay open a little longer, afternoons stretch into evenings and suddenly home feels less like somewhere to retreat to and more like somewhere to enjoy.

You don't need to completely redecorate to capture that feeling. A few small changes in colour, texture and the way you use your space can make home feel lighter, warmer and just a little more like being on holiday.

Here are a few of our favourite ways to bring that easy summer feeling home.

1
Let the Light In

Sometimes the simplest change makes the biggest difference.

Open the curtains, pull back heavier layers and let natural light become part of the room. Summer interiors don't need to feel perfectly styled — they should feel open, relaxed and lived in.

If your space feels a little dark, lighter cushions, throws or table linens can instantly soften it without changing anything permanent.

2
Bring in Natural Texture

Linen, woven baskets, timber, ceramics and rattan have a way of making a room feel warm without making it feel heavy.

You don't need much. A woven basket beside the sofa, a linen tablecloth, a ceramic vase or a natural tray on the coffee table can be enough to change the mood of a space.

Bill & Ginger note: Don't worry about everything matching. Natural materials look best when they're collected rather than perfectly coordinated.

3
Add a Little Warmth

Summer doesn't have to mean decorating everything in blue and white.

We love warm, sun-faded shades — soft terracotta, peach, cream, sandy beige and rich brown. They bring warmth into a room while still feeling relaxed and timeless.

Even something as simple as a striped cushion or warm-coloured linen napkins can give a neutral space an entirely different feeling.

4
Bring Something Green Inside

A branch from the garden can sometimes look better than an elaborate arrangement.

Eucalyptus, olive-like greenery, herbs or whatever happens to be growing nearby adds life to a room without making it feel overly decorated.

Place a few branches in a simple ceramic vase and let them be imperfect.

Keep it simple: One generous arrangement usually feels more relaxed than lots of small decorative pieces.

5
Make Everyday Moments Feel Like an Occasion

Some of the nicest things about being away are incredibly ordinary.

Coffee outside in the morning. Lunch that lasts longer than expected. A drink before dinner. Sitting somewhere simply because the evening is too nice to go inside.

There's no reason those things should only happen on holiday.

Set the table even when it's just the two of you. Take breakfast outside. Put a jug of water with lemon on the table. Use the nice glasses on a Tuesday.

Often it's not the house itself that creates the feeling — it's what you do in it.

A Home Doesn't Need to Be Perfect to Feel Beautiful

The homes we love most rarely feel like showrooms.

There are books left on tables, sandals by the door, a half-finished glass outside and cushions that aren't sitting quite where they started.

That's part of it.

Creating a home that feels like summer isn't really about decorating for a season. It's about making your space feel lighter, easier and more enjoyable to live in.

Open the windows. Bring something green inside. Invite someone over for lunch.

And don't save the good things for a special occasion.

Make home feel like somewhere you'd stay awhile.

A little sunlight, something beautiful on the table and nowhere you need to rush off to.
