Dressing for the weather we actually have

Bill & Ginger is for women who already know what suits them, and would rather not spend a Saturday hunting for it.

We buy for one summer: this one, here. That sounds obvious until you have spent a January in Sydney looking at a website still selling wool. Most of what reaches Australia and New Zealand is a northern season shipped six months late — knitwear in February, coats in the middle of a heatwave. We buy the other way round.

What that means in practice

Linen that has been washed before it reaches you, so it does not go stiff at the shoulders. Dresses cut to skim rather than cling, because there is a difference and you can feel it at thirty degrees. Sleeves that are actually long enough. Waists that sit where yours does instead of where a size chart thinks it should.

Every season starts with the same two questions. Will this be comfortable on a hot day? And will she still like it next summer? If the answer to either is no, it does not go on the site — however good it looks on a rail.

Who we buy for

Women in their forties, fifties and beyond, who have been dressing themselves for a long time and have opinions about it. Not a demographic we discovered; the people we were already buying for.

It is a specific job. Fabric that behaves in heat. A cut that works for a body that has lived. Colour that holds up in hard southern light, where half the prints that look lovely in a European studio simply go flat. And sizing that means something — our size charts are in Australian sizes, per garment, because a 12 is not a 12 everywhere and pretending otherwise wastes your afternoon.

How we work

We are small. We read our own emails. If something arrives and it is not right, say so and we will sort it out — free delivery both ways, thirty days, and no form to fill in first.

We would rather you kept the three things you love than bought ten you are unsure about. That is not a philosophy, it is just cheaper for everyone.
